Fitness & Active Leisure
Workforce State of Mind Survey
I am the co-founder and curator of the Fitness and Active Leisure Workforce State of Mind Survey. It shone a light on the experiences of the workforce (both employees and the self-employed), and the approach and capability of employers, in terms of workplace mental health. This twin-track approach gave the numbers and stories behind the data. We completed the survey three times from 2021 - 2023.
The response from the sector was huge, and the need for systemic improvements was clear. You can download the latest version of the survey (2023) below to find out:
-
How workforce wellbeing data compares over the three years of the survey.
-
Trends in employer maturity around workplace mental health.
-
What the workforce says about their sense of belonging at work.
-
Our recommendations for sector and employer-level action and much more.

Driving employer action
In response to our first report, we launched The Good Work Pledge in March 2021 as a way for employers to take clear action to show their commitment to employee mental health and work towards meeting the Thriving at Work Six Mental Health Core Standards, the government-backed framework for employers.
We called it The Good Work Pledge because the characteristics of 'good work' can help prevent new mental health problems developing and support those with mental health conditions to do well at work and thrive.
CIMSPA, the chartered body for the sector, backed our Pledge recognising it was good for businesses, for the sector workforce and for customers. The Pledge included an action planning guide, diagnostic tool and the use of The Good Work Pledge logo to show organisational commitment. Employers of all sizes signed the Pledge including leading names such as ukactive, MyZone, Les Mills UK, Parkwood Leisure, Everyone Active and Active Nation.
Changing the sector
In November 2023, we were delighted to announce CIMSPA as the new home for The Good Work Pledge underlining its commitment to workplace mental health. The move was a vitally important milestone in our work, placing the Pledge at the heart of the sector's governance. To find out more about the Pledge contact communications@cimspa.co.uk.
